2023 CESBC Pre-Conference Workshop: Culturally Responsive and Equitable Evaluation
Every year the CESBC Conference Committee offers a pre-conference workshop with a facilitator who can offer a cutting edge perspective that can help to develop and enhance the knowledge and practice of the evaluation community. This year we are excited to introduce our facilitator, as well as the workshop she will be presenting to the BC evaluation community this year.
Pre-Conference Workshop: Overview
Dr. Chandria D. Jones will be facilitating an interactive workshop on Culturally Responsive and Equitable Evaluation.
The book "Culturally Responsive and Equitable Evaluation: Visions and Voices of Emerging Scholars." describes culturally responsive and equitable evaluation as an evaluation paradigm that integrates diversity, equity, and inclusion into all phases of evaluation. Furthermore, culturally responsive and equitable evaluation incorporates cultural, structural, and contextual factors into the evaluation plan through participatory processes that shift power to those most impacted by the evaluation process. Culturally responsive and equitable evaluation focuses on the conscious awareness, recognition, and inclusion of the unique socioeconomic, cultural, and demographic profiles of Latinx; Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); and many other minority groups, before, during, and after an evaluation. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a current global movement to mobilize peers and professionals, particularly in the evaluation field, to address the perennial and multigenerational issues and experiences of racial inequity that have assailed groups who have historically been marginalized in the spectrum of the evaluation process.
As part of this training, participants will:
- Examine the concept of equity science as the foundation for inclusive and equitable evaluation methods like culturally responsive and equitable evaluation
- Discuss the history (and theoretical foundations) of culturally responsive and equitable evaluation
- Identify the steps to conduct culturally responsive and equitable evaluation
- Apply culturally responsive and equitable evaluation concepts to an evaluation case study
Through this interactive workshop, participants will learn about a variety of inclusive and equitable methods that can be used in CREE, participate in small group discussions to understand the steps for conducting CREE, and have an opportunity to apply their learning in a group case study.

The CESBC Conference Committee is excited to introduce Dr. Chandria D. Jones.
Dr. Chandria D. Jones, a trailblazing force in the world of research and evaluation, passionately championing culturally responsive and equitable evaluation. With a unique blend of expertise as a mixed-methods researcher, Chandria is at the forefront of driving meaningful change in the realms of systems transformation, social justice, and health equity.
At the heart of her work lies a commitment to amplifying the voices of historically marginalized populations, including people from racial and ethnic minorities groups, youth and families with lower-incomes, and individuals navigating mental health and substance use challenges, harnessing their insights for lasting societal shifts. Chandria infuses her evaluation with a lens of racial equity, diversity, and inclusion. She is a firm believer that authentic progress can only be achieved through a genuine commitment to community engagement and participatory methods.
As a Principal Research Scientist in Public Health and Affiliate Staff at the Center on Equity Research at NORC at the University of Chicago, Chandria's leadership shines as she spearheads research and evaluation related to behavioral health, homelessness, obesity, health disparities, and health communications. Her projects with federal agencies, foundations, and non-profits are beacons of equity, fueled by inclusive and equitable methods, where culturally responsive and equitable evaluation reign supreme.
Dr. Jones is also celebrated as the editor of the book, "Culturally Responsive and Equitable Evaluation: Visions and Voices of Emerging Scholars." This seminal work not only spotlights her profound dedication to the cause but also celebrates emerging scholars from historically marginalized backgrounds, enriching the landscape of culturally responsive and equitable evaluation.
Chandria's journey has been one of scholarly pursuits, earning a Ph.D. in Behavioral and Community Health from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.P.H. from Florida International University. Her commitment to tackling social, cultural, and historical nuances that underpin policy and practice transformation is demonstrated by being an alumnus of Leaders in Equitable Evaluation and Diversity (LEEAD) scholars program and a member of the Advancing Culturally responsive and Equitable (ACE) Evaluation Network, American Evaluation Association, and American Public Health Association.
