Webinar description:

Summary

Join us for a dialogue-based session that will support participants in reflecting on their positionality, ontology, and epistemologies as evaluators. Our intention is for this to be a part of your (un)(re)learning journey to gather and co-create an evaluation bundle – the methods, tools, approaches you use – that center, prioritize, and uplift Indigenous Peoples. Remaining cognizant of the words of Audre Lorde, reminding us that "[...] the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house," we will discuss key values and principles to walk with as evaluators and key considerations to make as you evolve your practices within an Indigenous context. We will give a 20-minute presentation followed by an interactive dialogue where we will respond to questions and discuss topics that are important to the group. Miigwetch, thank you!.

Biography of presenters:

Marissa Hill (she/her) was born and raised in what is now called Georgian Bay, Ontario, on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and the Historic Georgian Bay Métis Community, on pre-confederation treaty 5 and 16 territory. Marissa is a citizen of the Metis Nation of Ontario. As the Indigenous Innovation Lab Manager at the Indigenous Innovation Initiative, Marissa is co-creating a first-of-its-kind pre-seed through scale innovation lab in partnership with community, partners, and innovators. She was previously the Knowledge Management and Translation Associate for the Indigenous Innovation Initiative, and continues to lead knowledge governance, impact measurement, evaluation, and knowledge sharing functions. Marissa is committed to engaging in these activities through co-creation and using Indigenous methodologies that centre First Nation, Inuit and Metis Worldviews, Values, Principles and Protocols.


Oy Lein Jace Harrison is the Impact Analyst for the Indigenous Innovation Initiative hosted at Grand Challenges Canada. She holds a Master of Information in Critical Information Policy Studies from the University of Toronto, where she also earned her Hons BA in Communications, Culture and Info Tech; Professional Writing; and English Literature. In addition, she holds a Diploma in Digital Communications from Sheridan College and Certification in Canadian Copyright Law from Copyrightlaws.com. She is a trained librarian and continues to advocate for libraries' racialized communities during her personal time. Oy Lein has engaged in, and led, various race-based studies at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, University of Toronto Libraries, Federation of Black Canadians, and Ryerson University. These studies ranged in scope from Indigenous knowledge rights in libraries to Black health in the face of the pandemic. Oy Lein is committed to applying the teachings she has been given by members of the Indigenous community in an evaluative context and approaches her work through a Black, intersectional, and feminist lens.
